# Weston

{% hint style="info" %}
IoT Yocto does not provide support for [X11 framework](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Window_System).
{% endhint %}

### Weston Compositor Overview

The Weston compositor initializes by default during startup to showcase display capabilities. It offers a basic [XDG shell](https://wayland-book.com/xdg-shell-basics.html), along with example programs and demonstration utilities. Note that this setup is purely for demonstration and evaluation purposes and doesn't provide a full desktop environment solution. Developers may need to extend its capabilities or consider using a different framework.

### Weston Examples

Weston example programs and utilities are located at `/usr/bin/weston-*` in IoT Yocto. For instance, `weston-info` delivers configuration and version details.

### Managing Weston

Weston, as a system compositor, manages display hardware interfaces at startup.

To directly handle DRM device nodes, such as using the `modetest` utility, you must stop the Weston service first. Otherwise, you may encounter errors like `failed to set mode: Permission denied`.

**Stop Weston:**

```bash
systemctl stop weston
```

**Restart Weston:**

```bash
systemctl start weston
```

### Configuring Weston Default Resolution

To modify the default resolution for Weston compositor:

1. Locate the configuration file at:

   ```
   /etc/xdg/weston/weston.ini
   ```
2. Edit or add the following section:

   ```ini
   [output]
   name=HDMI-A-1
   mode=720x576
   ```

   * Ensure `name` matches the output name from *modetest*, e.g., `HDMI-A-1`.
   * Set `mode` as:
     * `<WIDTH>x<HEIGHT>` (e.g., `1280x720`).
     * `preferred` for the monitor's
